Have you ever actually sat and wondered what your emotions mean?
With the clients and companies i work with, most do not even know how to recognize they even have emotions or what they are! And so many of us keep things locked deep inside, most definitely not showing any emotion at work that is for sure. Obviously there is a time and a place for this and hopefully you have a supportive partner, friend or colleague you can lean on when the ‘sh*t hits the fan’ as they say.
But what do emotions tell us?
E-motion- means energy in motion. You can certainly feel when it’s a good energy and when it’s a bad energy by how you feel. You might feel your jaw or muscles tense up when you are angry. You might have a smile on your face when you are happy and your heart rate might go up when you see the person you love or get those butterflies in your stomach at the start of a loving, new relationship. When it’s good energy you feel uplifted, easy and energised and when it’s bad energy you feel heavy, weighed down and low. You definitely feel it in your physical body.
In my view, emotions are your guide. For instance, you might be sitting in a meeting about to sign a big deal when you don’t feel comfortable anymore, something is creating doubt in your mind? You have a sixth sense and you don’t sign.
I remember being proposed to and crying tears- which others thought were happy tears but i knew they were sad tears and i didn’t know why? I didn’t go through with that marriage.
If it doesn’t feel good, don’t do it. Easier said than done and obviously within parameters as we all have to do somethings we don’t like for our job, our relationship, our family.
Emotions are meant to be felt and expressed. Grieving for instance, keeping it inside can really harm you. Letting go and feeling the pain, allowing yourself to cry, to shout, to scream. It’s like the release of a pressure valve.
EQ, emotional intelligence, one of the most valuable characteristics one can attain.
But how do you get it?
It takes time, experience and the will to communicate openly and honestly with yourself and others to learn from situations and GROW. Isn’t that what it’s all about? To grow? To be a better version of you? You begin to recognise feelings, you can deal with them better, feel them and let them go.
