The Surprising Link Between Posture And Confidence

Many people already know the importance of good posture for maintaining proper alignment, reducing pain and preventing injury.

But did you know that posture can also have a significant impact on your confidence?

That’s right, standing up straight could be the key to boosting your self-esteem and projecting a more confident image to the world.

According to a recent study by researchers at Ohio State University, posture can have a significant impact on our mood and self-perception. Participants in the study were asked to sit in either a slouched or an upright position, while completing a series of tasks designed to measure their levels of self-confidence and mood.

Those who sat in an upright position reported feeling more positive, confident and energetic, while those who slouched reported feeling more negative, anxious and fatigued.

But that’s not all – other studies have found that posture can also impact how others perceive us. In a study conducted by researchers at Harvard Business School, participants were asked to rate the confidence, competence and hireability of actors in job interviews.

The actors were filmed sitting in either an upright or slouched position, and the results were clear – those who sat up straight were perceived as more confident, competent and hireable than their slouching counterparts.

Of course, improving posture is easier said than done – many of us have developed bad habits over years of sitting at desks or hunching over our phones. But with a little effort and the right techniques, anyone can learn to improve their posture and reap the benefits.

Here are a few tips to get you started:

  1. Sit up straight – This may seem obvious, but it’s worth repeating. When sitting at a desk, make sure your back is straight, your shoulders are relaxed and your feet are flat on the floor. Avoid hunching over your keyboard or slouching in your chair.
  2. Stretch it out – Take breaks throughout the day to stretch your back, neck and shoulders. Simple exercises like shoulder rolls, neck stretches can help loosen up tight muscles and improve your posture.
  3. Invest in good ergonomics – If you spend a lot of time at a desk, invest in a chair and desk that are designed for good posture. Look for chairs with adjustable height, add a seat wedge (see our shop) and desks that allow you to adjust the height and angle of your computer screen.
  4. Get moving – Regular exercise can help improve your posture by strengthening the muscles that support your spine. Try incorporating activities like walking and weight training into your routine to build core strength and improve your posture.
  5. Seek help – If you’re struggling with your posture or pain don’t hesitate to seek help from a professional.
